Becoming Me
The week before freshman year was stressful. I was sitting at home just talking with my sister, who had recently graduated, like any other day. We started talking about my first day of high school and about all the clubs and organizations that there are in high school. She was telling me about the clubs she had been in and one of those clubs happened to be Future Business Leaders of America, FBLA. I asked her to explain to me what FBLA was and what I would do in the organization. She told me that the club had meetings once a month. In FBLA, I would also be given the opportunity to participate in volunteer projects and state competitions. I was instantly drawn to joining this club, so I decided to join when school started that year. When I joined FBLA that year I had a little knowledge of what it was about, but I had no idea what I was going to experience. Participating in FBLA the last four years has taught me life skills: being involved, being a team player, and becoming outgoing.
My first FBLA meeting I attending during my freshman year was over in a flash. The seat I chose was a seat in the back of the room where a couple of my friends were already sitting. Once everyone was sitting down the meeting began. The president quickly covered the main points, then we were released. Even though the meeting was over quickly, I was excited to be apart of the FBLA organization.
Being in FBLA was a great way to learn to be involved outside of school. The advisers, Mrs. Hughes, Mrs. Mayers, and Mrs. Sturguess encouraged me to volunteer in the community through FBLA. Volunteering wasn’t the only way I was involved in FBLA. I participated in our fundraising activities: serving with Hy-Vee at weddings, working concession stand with Hy-Vee at the Freedom Festival, and working concession stands at basketball games. Participating in those fundraisers has led me to connect to other members in the organization. I also participated in state competitions, and I was allowed to go to State Leadership Conference my freshman year, sophomore year, and senior year.
As I became more involved in FBLA I decided the next step should be becoming an officer. Becoming an officer for FBLA made me start working more with others as a team, rather than by myself. My friends in FBLA encouraged me to become an officer my sophomore year. FBLA officers that year went to a conference called an Executive Leadership Conference, ELC. ELC was a great opportunity to learn team building skills. There were officers from all FBLA Chapters across Missouri, that I got the chance to connect with through this conference. The speaker at this conference split all the officers up into teams. He gave us a team building activity where we had to solve clues and do what the cards described to do as a team. The team that finished the activity the fastest won. Even though my team did not win the activity, I gained team building skills. I learned how to positively work together to solve problems and that sometimes I need help.
Being a team player was not always easy for me. When I was younger, I used to be one of those kids who sat in the back of the class and did not say a word. I was still that kind of girl when I became a freshman. Through the years of being in FBLA, I have definitely gained self-confidence and became more outgoing. Every year of high school I evolved. This year, my senior year, I became the Vice President of Community Service for FBLA. As a Vice President, I worked with our President, Skylar, and two other officers to plan our FBLA kickoff party. During our kickoff party, officers had to get up and speak to the other members and introduce themselves. Skylar and I also had to explain the games to the members. After the meeting was over one of our advisers, Mrs. Hughes, pulled Skylar and I aside and told us that she thought that we have come a long way from being shy freshman. She also told us how proud she was of us, and that we did a great job running the meeting.
Running that meeting was the start of many more events I plan to be a part of this year. I am going to continue to learn more life lessons and important skills from this organization. I will encourage others to be a part of FBLA by telling them how I benefited from this organization, and maybe it would help them learn valuable life lessons and skills as well. Being involved, being a team player, and being outgoing-I have learned these skills through FBLA, and I plan to apply them to my life after high school.
